What CPW Steamboat has to say

Every week we get multiple calls from people in Steamboat wanting us to relocate a bear. Relocating a bear is a last resort for us and here is why:

1. We have no place to put them where they will not get into trouble again, or just return to where we moved them from. There is no “bear haven” that we can just go stick them.

2. Once a bear is caught and tagged once (with 2 ear tags), per policy it has to be euthanized if it gets into trouble again.

3. Removing a bear without the human resident changing behavior will just lead to another bear coming in for the food reward. (Trash, BBQ’s, Birdfeeders, Pet Food, Fruiting Trees and Bushes, and Unlocked Cars and Homes).

We must learn to co-exist with the wildlife in our community and do a better job of eliminating food rewards for these animals.
